I was recently hired as the event photographer to cover Claire Caudwell’s private birthday party, held at The Dorchester in London.  I’ve photographed a lot of events but knew this one would be very special.  The guest list alone was impressive, with Boris Becker in attendance, plus Lizzie Cundy, Danielle O’Hara, Michelle Heaton, and Sonique to name a few.  The brief was to take a very candid approach and a few grip and grins etc.  The evening started with me photographing guests enjoying a champagne reception in anticipation of the arrival of birthday girl Claire, husband John and their family.  This was a great opportunity for me to hide amongst the guests and grab some really nice candid moments.  From here the guests were asked to take their seats in the ballroom for dinner.  Claire then made her grand entrance into the room, escorted by two dancers to the applause of her friends and family – I managed to get some great images of this taking place.  The evening was broken up to include performances by singer Matt Vankan, later DNA Duo act, pianist Chris Curtis, singer Johnathan Bremner and singer Nenaz, all leading up to the main performance at the end of the evening.  In between the courses and performances were some lovely speeches by John and especially their children who delivered the birthday message brilliantly.  Up to this point I had covered the majority of the event’s proceedings and waited for the main act to be announced – it was the spectacular Mick Hucknall, from Simply Red.  I have to say at this point how amazing he sounded live, it was just like a polished recording, very impressive.  It wasn’t too long until Claire took to the stage and joined Mick as they sang to the party.  The whole event was just amazing, certainly the best birthday party I’ve ever been to.  Claire, John, their family and friends now have a few memories to look back on from the work I’ve provided.  A huge thank you to Claire & John Caudwell for hiring me, Kathy George for all your communications, the family and friends for making me feel very welcome, and not forgetting Mike and his son from Digitalfilm Ltd, who I worked alongside all evening.

Here are a few pictures from the event
